The term 'holistic education' is often applied rather casually to indicate that a school's approach to teaching goes beyond academic education. In reality it reflects a much more fundamental difference in approach. It has been described as 'helping students be the most that they can be'. As well as intellectual and academic development it aims to encompass physical, spiritual, social, artistic, creative and emotional aspects of a child's development. This broad based approach is particularly relevant when dealing with children with complex needs, either inherent or acquired.

Holistic education is based on the premise that each person finds identity, meaning, and purpose in life through connections to the community, to the natural world. It aims to call forth from students an intrinsic reverence for life and a passionate love of learning. This is done, not through an academic “curriculum” that condenses the world into instructional packages, but through direct engagement with the environment. The art of holistic education lies in its responsiveness to the diverse learning styles of students and the needs of evolving young minds.

At Colombo School of Arts and Sciences we foster this concept strongly. We use collaboration rather than competition to help students feel connected. By using real-life experiences, current events, the dramatic arts and other lively sources of knowledge in place of textbook information, teachers kindle the love of learning. By encouraging reflection and questioning rather than passive memorization of “facts”, teachers keep alive the “flame of intelligence” that is so much more than an abstract problem-solving skill. We model responsibility, respect, and compassion, fostering the same virtues in the “heart” of each student.

We believe that every student is gifted in his or her own way. A holistic approach to education helps develop each student’s unique gifts and talents. We believe in taking responsibility for the development of the “whole being” by guiding students to find identity, meaning and a purpose in life.
