‘SPERO – Hope for Serendib’, organised by the students of the Colombo School of Arts (CSA) in aid of the Leprosy Hospital in Hendala, was held at the British School Auditorium on Saturday, 1st August 2015. Sitarist Pradeep Ratnayake was joined on stage by Ananda Dabare (violin), Ravibandu Vidyapati (percussion), Sureka Amarasinghe (flute), Peshala Manoj (tabla), Suraj Gunewardena, Karunaratne Bandara (percussion) and Isuru Perera (percussion). Together, these renowned Sri Lankan artistes kept the audience enthralled with strains that recreated the magic of ‘Pradeepanjali’.

Sri Lanka is amongst the 16 countries in the world where there has been a rise in the number of leprosy patients with six new patients being detected on a daily basis. In 2014, a total of 2280 new patients were detected, with 50% of them being from the western province, and 25% of the total being from the Colombo district. Transmission of this disease is not under control as more child cases and female cases are reported along with many high endemic pockets of leprosy patients have been detected.

Ms Shaleeka Jayalath, Principal, Colombo School of Arts (CSA) - the international school affiliated to Imperial Institute of Higher Education (IIHE) in Colombo, and Dr Thilaka Weerakoon, Director Education at IIHE, said that they are pleased to announce that students who take their London A-Levels at CSA will have direct admission to four Salford Degrees. Additionally a concession on tuition fees will be granted. “What’s more”, Jayalath added, “students will also have the opportunity to study at Salford in their third year if they wish to”.

Commencing March 2, 2015, the Colombo School of Arts (CSA) will offer six new programmes for students. Three of these programmes will cater to students who are already attached to schools and would like to benefit from an after-school programme. CSA are therefore introducing the Cambridge O-Level Programme targeted at the May/June 2017 examination, the Cambridge International AS-Level Programme targeted at the May/June 2016 examination, and the Cambridge A-Level Programme targeted at the May/June 2017 examination. The other three programmes are 8-week revision programmes targeted at the May/June 2015 examination and are open to any O-Level, AS-Level or A-Level student due to sit this examination.

This series, organised by CSA, offers free lectures, presentations and discussions for the benefit of students who wish to learn more about interesting topics and subjects relevant to their chosen areas of study, or anyone wishing to have an insight into a new subject matter.
